Many of us, when we think of massage, relate it to sore muscles or a chance to unwind. For the person in treatment for cancer or recovering from it, massage takes on other meanings. Instead of being used to work out knots, detoxify the body, or increase once's range of motion, massage becomes a strategy to lower anxiety and pain, improve energy, or decrease nausea. It becomes a form of communication and a way to feel more loved. It also helps to re-establish a connection with oneself. It may be a way to ease the discomfort of a medical procedure or pass the time while waiting for a consultation with the doctor.

Massage is one of the most popular complementary therapies. Complememtary therapies are used in conjunction with the conventional interventions of mainstream medicine. They are not used as an alternative to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgery. While massage is not a cure for cancer, it may help diminish the side effects of conventional treatments and improve quality of life.

Most touch modalities, even those with a reputation for being vigorous, such as sports massage, Thai massage, can be adjusted for use with seriously ill people. Acupressure/Shiatsu - oriental-based system of finger pressure which treat special points along acupuncture "meridians" the invinsible channels of energy flow in the body. These pressure points can activate the 'chi' which means the life force energy or drain excess chi..Clients receive sessions while fully dressed. Acupressure can be adopted to the hospital bed and clients find it both stimulating and relaxing, which can ease the fatique that accompanies illness. Only a very light pressure should be use when patients are medically fragile.

  • Compassionate Touch or Medical massage- is a therapeutic modality for relating to elderly and ill individuals. Gentle touch and other relaxation techniques would benefit all patients from receiving a massage session either in hospital bed, wheelchair or massage table.
  • Deep Tissue- releases the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the grain of muscles, tendons and fascia.
  • Myofascial Release- is a form of bodywork that is manipulative in nature and seeks to rebalance the body by releasing tension in the fascia. Long stretching strokes are utitized to release muscular tension.
  • Swedish Massage- a system of long strokes, kneading and friction techiques on the superficial layers of the muscles, combined with active and passive movements of the joints.
  • Friction-  is the deepest of Swedish massage strokes. A deep circular movements applied to soft tissue causing the underlying layers of tissue to rub agains each other and causes an increase in blood flow to the area being massage.
  • Trigger Point or Myotherapy or Neuromuscular Therapy-  applies concentrated finger pressure to "trigger poins" (painful irritated areas in muscles) to break cycles of spasm and pain.
  • Tapotement- is executed with cupped hands, fingers or the edge of the hand with short, alternating taps to the client.
  • Effleurage- is a stroke generally used in Swedish massage treatment, This smooth, gliding stroke is used to relax soft tissue and is applied using both hands.
  • Chair Massage- is administered while the client is clothed and seated in a specially designed chair. On-site massage usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes and is intended to relax and improve circulation.
  • Therapeutic Touch - soothing touch calms the body by restoring its flow of energy.
  • Healing Touch - Soft touch helps restore harmony and balance by working with the flow of energy in the body

Medical professionals becoming more knowledgeable about the healing prospect of massage therapy. Physicians or doctors are prescribing therapeutic massage for a wide range of medical condition such as frozen shoulder, back pain, headaches or migrane, chronic fatique, acute and chronic condition, foot pain, pelvic pain, arthritis, high blood pressure or neck pain and many other soft tissues injuries.

If you think massage is only for the indulgent and wealthy people, think again. The biggest relief is felt by the stressed-out and tense, and that's something all of us- from movie star to stay -home-mom to doctor--have been at one time or another. I've seen so many individuals including celebrities, professionals, dignitaries, and in all walks of life. For some, massage is necessary to get through the day. People hold stress and deal with it differently, so their needs vary. Massage is intimate, so it's important that you feel comfortable. One of the biggest misconceptions is that massage is a sex industry, It's  not --- it's a medical industry.

Below is only one of my modalities:

Enar theory of Disease & Recovery- A condition of dysfunction, when something is unwell, impaired or pathological within the body/mind processes. Disease states are said to be unresolved problem areas within the body/mind's systems which are not operating as integrated parts within the whole. These are areas of Asymmetry are places where the body is unable to complete its adaptive cycle, areas where homeostasis is not present. Disease come from genetic heritage, traumas, mental emotional stress, pollution of all sorts, age(degenaration), viruses, depletion of energy.

  • Pain relief—this is the most prominent effect of Sc/Enar therapy
  • Anti-inflammatory effect—the action of Sc/Enar can dramatically speed recovery through improved microcirculation.
  • Anti-Oedema effect—Sc/Enar treatment can help reduce swelling by redistributing the fluid between the lymphatic and vascular systems.
  • Increased blood flow to the treatment area
  • Faster wound healing—this is due to the faster regeneration of damaged tissues
  • Anti-allergic/anti-shock effect—Local or general reactions can occur as a result of allergies, reactions to drugs or insect bites,

Enar is found to be cost effective long lasting treatment for chronic pain. The stickiness is a normal feature of the Enar in response to any asymmetry it detects in the body, the body's own natural healing mechanism.

How long it takes for a session?

You have to sign a form and answer all necessary question that is related to your own health and history. Then, do the assessment and evaluate your condition of health. It may take half hour to an hour or more. If needed, I refer you to other health professionals. There is no magic, everyone is different. For some, after the session, they felt very different when they first come to the door and for others it takes a while to feel the difference in their body. So, you need a follow up session/s.

It is important to talk about your medical history with your therapist, even if the massage is part of a beauty routine such as a facial or pedicure. This will help the therapist make the right adjustment to the session so that it is both safe and comfortable for you.

A number of the side effects cause by chemotherapy, radiation and surgery require the therapist to decrease the pressure of their strokes and to be mindful of areas affected by such things as medical devices or fragile bones. Let the therapist know if you are affected by any of the following conditions:

  • fatigue
  • risk for easy bruising or bleeding
  • low white blood cell count
  • bone metastases or fragile bones as a result of osteoporosis
  • recent blood clot
  • oedema or lymphoedema
  • nausea
  • medical devices
  • pain
  • incisions
  • neuropathy
  • skin conditions such as rashes, broken areas of skin or fungal infections

Making the right adjustments

  • Risk for lymphoedema - If part ofyour treatment or diagnostic process included the removal of lymph nodes from the neck, armpit, or groin, you shoud only have genrle massage in that quadrant of the body.
  • Neuropathy - Certain chemotherpies can cause long term numbness in the hands and feet. A lighter pressure is best for those areas.
  • Bone fragility - some treatments, such as radiation or medication, or the disease itself, may cause the bones to become more fragile. Care should be taken in those areas so that undue pressure or extreme stretching is avoided.
